What’s coming up…

There is plenty happening in recreational fishing right now and more coming up.

Here’s a quick update on what’s coming up in the next couple of months:

  1. NRE Fisher Forums - to be held in Hobart (27 November) and Launceston (4 December) - we’ll be there flying the flag for rec fishers and listening to what you have to say. To find out more or book your spot click here

  2. Rock Lobster Harvest Strategy - a working group, including reps from TARFish, has been established to guide the development of a draft rock lobster harvest strategy that we expect will be released around March next year. We’re also looking forward to seeing the research results for the rec only areas and an update on use of the mandatory catch reporting app.

  3. Update your member details! - in the next couple of weeks we’ll be sending out reminder emails and SMS’s to members that are yet to switch to the new digital membership card. We’re also updating our member offers and specials so there has never need a better time to update your details and download the card into your digital wallet. If you can’t wait until then, please contact us here

  4. Better Fishing Grants - if you’ve got a great idea to make fishing better where you are, let us know! We’re keen to help fishers identify projects they want in the areas they fish. You can contact our Engagement Officer Kelly Hunt on 0428 861 710 or kelly.hunt@tarfish.org and you can read more about the program here

  5. Sand flathead - there is a feasibility study underway for sand flathead restocking - should be out by the end of the year (and no, we haven’t been given a “sneak peak” of what’s in it). There is fish tagging going on now. We’re also gearing up to do some stewardship activities over the summer period - we’ll let you know as soon as they’re ready to go!

  6. Scallop catch sharing - the department is working on the rules around catch sharing for scallops (yay!). We’re expecting it to allow for one non-fisher to be able to take a bag of scallops and also a boat limit. Consultation expected about the end of the year.

  7. Sardines - there is a new stock assessment that should be out any day and we’re expecting to find out more about the gov’s plan is for any proposed commercial fishery.

  8. RecFAC - The Government hasn’t made a decision on the “FACs” - although it is expected “soon.” There is an interim process that is called a “core group” for each fishery that includes a rep from TARFish. We’ll keep you posted.

    Thanks.
